The Competition Promotion and Consumer Protection Committee organized a roundtable discussion on the topic: “Antitrust Regulation of Digital Platform Operators: International Experience, Emerging Trends, and Recommendations for the Republic of Uzbekistan.”
The event brought together representatives of local, foreign, and global digital platform operators, as well as experts from the World Bank.
The roundtable was opened by F. Karabayev, Deputy Chairman of the Competition Promotion and Consumer Protection Committee, who delivered introductory remarks on the theoretical, legal, and institutional foundations of antitrust regulation of digital platform operators in the context of the digital economy. He also highlighted international experience in this field, current development trends, and prospects for further improving the competitive environment in the Republic of Uzbekistan.
In addition, Alexey Ivanov, Director of the BRICS Competition Law and Policy Centre and a World Bank expert, delivered a presentation on recent legislative developments related to the regulation of digital platforms, emerging approaches in international practice, and their importance in ensuring a healthy competitive environment in digital markets.
The main objective of the event was to discuss issues related to promoting innovation, fostering a healthy and fair competitive environment in digital markets, ensuring effective consumer protection, and further improving existing mechanisms for the antitrust regulation of digital platform operators.
In particular, participants considered and discussed proposals on revising the criteria for recognizing the dominant position of digital platforms, introducing special regulatory procedures for global digital platforms while taking into account their specific characteristics, eliminating factors that restrict competition in digital markets, reducing barriers to market entry, and improving legal and institutional mechanisms in this area.
At the conclusion of the event, it was emphasized that the views and proposals expressed by participants would play an important role in developing further measures aimed at improving competition policy in the digital economy, incorporating modern international experience into national practice, and ensuring an open and transparent competitive environment in digital markets.
