Consumers’ right protection: challenges and solutions
Press conference on the results of 2022
On March 14, 2023, the Competition Promotion and Consumer Protection Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan held a conference on the topic: “Consumers’ right protection: challenges and solutions”.
The Competition Promotion and Consumer Protection Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan has identified a number of events by March 15 – World Consumer Rights Day. During the Conference opinions were discussed and expressed on such topics as advertising of medicines and dietary supplements, as well as its problems and solutions, the importance of advertising and the right marketing approach in conveying information about goods and services to consumers, consumer rights in the field of financial services: European practice.
The event included presentations of leaders and responsible representatives of Uzbekistan and international organizations on innovations, problems and solutions in the field.
Also at the conference were awarded the winners of the online Olympiad “Financially literate young consumer”, organized among students of higher educational institutions together with the organization “German Sparkassenstiftung for International Cooperation” (Germany), as well as bloggers and active public figures. Its main goal is to increase legal knowledge and literacy of the population, especially young people.
Every year, on 15 March the international community celebrates World Consumer Rights Day, the holding of which marked by the UN to the anniversary of speech of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in Congress in 1962. On this day, John F. Kennedy in his speech for the first time described the concept of “consumer” and designated basic consumer rights.
Each year, World Consumer Rights Day adopts a theme to highlight. This year the theme promoted is “Empowering consumers through clean energy transitions”.
In Uzbekistan this day was recognized after the adoption of the law “On consumer protection” in April 1996.
On March 15 of this year, the Committee, in connection with World Consumer Protection Day, held an online Olympiad “Financially Competent Young Consumer” in 2 stages, in which 500 students of higher and secondary special educational institutions of the republic who demonstrated their knowledge in the financial sphere took part.
Over the past period of 2023, the Committee carried out the following activities in the field of consumer protection and regulation of the advertising market: Solving consumer problems: Based on the conducted systematic researches on the protection of the rights of an indefinite range of consumers and received appeals, it was established that a total of damage was caused to 3,259,111 consumers in the amount of 75,600.6 million soums, and as a result of the recalculation of funds in the amount of 60,609.9 million soums, the rights of 2,133,721 consumers were restored. Measures are being taken to recalculate the remaining funds to consumers and restore their rights.
During the event, representatives of the media and the public were informed about the work done by the Committee in 2022.
